What the R-410A Refrigerant Phaseout Means for Henderson Homeowners

Nevada hasn’t passed a state law setting an earlier deadline the way New York has, so homeowners here are operating under federal rules, and those rules are more permissive than some local coverage suggests.

Why Repair Costs Will Rise Even If Your System Is Still Legal

This is where the concern is legitimate. R-410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), and HFCs are subject to a cap-and-trade phasedown under the same AIM Act framework, stepping down toward an 85% production reduction by 2036. Less R-410A in the supply chain over time means higher prices for service refrigerant, and that trend is already measurable: wholesale prices climbed roughly 40 to 70% between 2022 and recent purchasing periods.

That said, a healthy, well-maintained system that isn’t leaking refrigerant won’t need a recharge. Refrigerant doesn’t get consumed the way fuel does; it circulates in a closed loop. Both R-454B and R-32 carry an A2L safety classification, meaning they’re mildly flammable under conditions that don’t reflect normal household use. Systems engineered for A2L refrigerants include spark-proof components and integrated leak detection sensors that make them safe for residential installation.
